Crater Lake

Near Crater Lake in Oregon, Early June, 2012

To participate in the Saturday Snapshot meme post a photo that you (or a friend or family member) have taken, and then leave a direct link to your post in the linky at At Home With Books. Photos can be old or new, and be of any subject as long as they are clean and appropriate for all eyes to see. How much detail you give in the caption is entirely up to you. Please don’t post random photos that you find online.

The Voluntourist

Ken Budd is trying to come to terms with the reality that, though he desperately wants children, his wife, just as firmly, does not. His beloved father passes away and Budd realizes that there will be no children in his life to mourn his own passing. He decides to divert this desire to have children into efforts to help others and makes plans to volunteer in places of need around the world.

In the course of this book, he ventures to New Orleans after Katrina, to China to work with special needs students, to Costa Rica to teach English, to Ecuador to explore the effect of global warming, to the West Bank to help Palestinians, and to Africa to work with orphans.

In the process, Budd teaches us that there are ways to effectively work through what appears to be a no-win situation.

A different kind of travel memoir.

TGIF: Your Most Valuable Book

From your personal collection of books, which ones hold the most value to you - is it signed by the author? or maybe it's your favorite story of all time? Share it with us.

I'm sure I'm the odd bug here, but I haven't a single book that I'd be sad if I lost. In fact, I'm the opposite of most bookies:  I give away most of my books!

How about you?

TGIF at GReads is for Fridays to re-cap the week's posts & to propose a question for book bloggers.

Top Ten Books I'd Recommend As Good Beach Reads

Ten books from ten different genres,
light reads, but
all just a little bit more thoughtful than
your average trashy beach read.

The Monk Downstairs
A monk leaves the monastery and
moves into the home of a jaded single mom.

Lois on the Loose:
One Woman, One Motorbike,
20,000 Miles Across the Americas

The World is Not Enough
Best historical fiction ever.

Good Omens
A wacky tale of the Apocalypse.

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
Mysterious...

Game of Thrones
Action! Adventure!

Chancy and the Grand Rascal
Chancy sets off to find his family
accompanied by the trickiest con man of them all.
One of my favorite books from childhood.

Lonesome Dove
When better to read this fabulous western
than this summer?

How to Be Perfect: Poems
Yes, it's a book of poems
but it's a book of poems
that even you,
you who hate poems,
even you will like.

Julie & Julia
Finally, how about a story that combines
memoir with food?

What do you recommend for this summer's reading list?
